Singapore's NUS, NTU detect network intrusion in April

Xinhua, May 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) detected breach of its IT networks last month, said Singapore's Cyber Security Agency (CSA) on Friday.

Intrusions into NTU's networks were detected on April 19, while NUS detected an unauthorized intrusion into its IT systems on April 11, said CSA.

CSA confirmed that both attacks were carefully planned and work of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors. The objective may be to steal government or research-related information.

Affected networks at both NUS and NTU have been removed and replaced.

Fortunately, CSA said daily operations of both universities, including critical IT systems such as student admissions and examinations databases, were not affected.

Aloysius Cheang, executive vice-president of global computing security association Cloud Security Alliance, said hackers could be eyeing for research date of commercial value.

The statement added that NUS and NTU have increased vigilance, and adopted additional security measures beyond those already in place after the incident.

The NUS and NTU breaches come on the heels of a breach of the Ministry of Defence system in February this year. Endit
