City of Rome and province clash over garbage crisis

The City of Rome and the Region of Lazio, which includes Rome, are at odds on handling the crisis of overflowing trash around the capital city.
Virginia Raggi, mayor of Rome, said Wednesday that the situation was "a disgrace" and that she had petitioned the Lazio regional government to authorize space and funding for new waste disposal sites outside the city
Lazio Governor Nicola Zingaretti said no such requests had been received.
The problem has attracted widespread attention in the country. Former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has called for an end to the political bickering and said volunteers from his political party would help clean up parts of the city this weekend.
Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti told the lower house of parliament on Wednesday that current infrastructure was inadequate to handle the problem and that no existing plans would help significantly.
Rome's garbage problem has multiple causes: too few waste disposal sites, insufficient staff and equipment for collection, as well as corruption. Endi
