Roundup: ABU media summit focuses on preparing audiences for disasters

Xinhua, May 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

The third Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) kicked off here on Wednesday.

The theme of the summit this year is "Information For All: Media Saving Lives."

Over 200 eminent experts and media practitioners from around the globe joined the summit to develop practical projects to put media at the heart of education for climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness.

Officials say the summit will adopt the Dhaka Declaration which will be an action plan for ABU members to prepare their organizations and staff to fulfill their most important public mandate - to save lives and prepare audiences for future disasters.

Bangladesh's state-run radio Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television are the two co-organizers of the summit along with ABU.

A total of eight sessions will be held in the conference where experts and media practitioners will mainly talk to gather ideas for developing practical projects.

The Dhaka Declaration will be placed to the United Nations to include it as an agenda of its world conference on Disaster Risk Reduction scheduled to be held in Cancun of Mexico, said Bangladeshi Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu.

He said the summit this year is a timely landmark event.

He said the boom of broadcast and all other mass media sectors in Bangladesh under the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the government's firm commitment to address climate change and DRR are the two most significant reasons to describe the relevance of this summit in Dhaka.

In a website post, ABU said the summit presents an opportunity for its members to be part of the global movement to prepare wide audiences for future calamities in the Asia-Pacific region.
