IOC Evaluation Commission arrive in Los Angeles

Xinhua, May 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission arrived in Los Angeles Tuesday for three days of working meetings and venue visits, as the LA 2024 bid team prepares to demonstrate its plans to harness California's creativity and imagination to connect the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the future.

The IOC Evaluation Commission is chaired by IOC Member Patrick Baumann and includes IOC Members Marisol Casado, Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski, Kirsty Coventry, Nawal El Moutawakel, Ugur Erdener, Habu Gumel, Poul-Erik Høyer, Gunilla Lindberg, Bernard Rajzman, Tsunekazu Takeda along with Duane Kale and Kereyn Smith. The director in charge is Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi and the delegation includes experts in areas such as Paralympic sport, sustainability, finance, and transport.

LA 2024 and its stakeholders will host a day-long working meeting on Wednesday, before a tour of key LA 2024 Games sites on Thursday. The visit concludes on Friday, with a press conference in Downtown Los Angeles, before the IOC delegation flies to Paris, the other 2024 candidate city. The visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission marks the latest stage in a collaborative, consultative bidding process, which includes extensive dialogue between LA 2024 and the IOC's experts.

LA 2024 has a unique opportunity for a Candidate City: providing the IOC Evaluation Commission with a comprehensive tour of the existing UCLA campus facilities that comprise the proposed Olympic and Paralympic Village. With no new permanent venues required to host the Games, the venue tour will give the IOC Evaluation Commission the clearest, most accurate picture possible of LA 2024's low-risk and truly sustainable Games Plan.

"We truly believe that Los Angeles is the right city to connect the Games to the future and we are grateful to have this opportunity to present our plan face-to-face with the IOC. With no new permanent venues to build and 88% public support, LA 2024's high-tech, low-risk, sustainable and athlete-led Games will serve the Olympic and Paralympic Movements in 2024 and beyond. We hope to communicate that clearly to the IOC Evaluation Commission this week as we tour our wealth of existing world-class venues; as we introduce our private venue partners, government stakeholders and creative talents; and as this city's remarkable passion for sport shines through," said LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman.

The IOC Evaluation Commission will report back to the whole IOC membership at a Candidate City briefing, scheduled to take place in Lausanne, Switzerland on July 11 and 12. Endit
