France's conservative Estrosi rules out gov't post

Xinhua, May 8, 2017 Adjust font size:

French senior conservative Christian Etrosi on Monday announced his decision to resign as president of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region to regain his post of Nice mayor.

Estrosi, who endorsed newly-elected President Emmanuel Macron, ruled out rumors that he would possibly join Macron's executive team.

"From next week, I will resign from the leadership of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region to become mayor of Nice City. My only ambition is to serve my city and my region and not to enter the government," Estrosi said.

"Neither a post in the government, nor another proposal will make me change my objective (which) is decidedly Nice," he added.

Estrosi, a close ally to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, has been president of the southeast region since December 2015. Endit
