Tanzanian VP urges measures to improve transport safety for schoolchildren

Xinhua, May 8, 2017 Adjust font size:

Tanzanian Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday called upon responsible authorities to review modes of transport for schoolchildren as part of the long-term measures to tame road carnage in the east African nation.

Samia made the directives when she leads thousands of mourners in Arusha to pay their last respects to 33 pupils, two teachers and a driver who were killed in an accident in Karatu District last Saturday.

Apart from sympathizing with the bereaved families, who were gathered at 12,000-capacity Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial stadium, the vice president expressed worry over the rising number of deaths from road accident.

She denounced reckless driving, urging responsible authorities to put up more road signs in accident-prone areas across Tanzania.

"It is imperative to put more road signs to prevent such deaths," she said.

"Take all the necessary steps to ensure children are safe when boarding a school bus. This will help to rescue our children from unnecessary accidents," she said. Endit
