Around 100 rioting Feyenoord fans arrested in Rotterdam

Around 100 Feyenoord fans were arrested on Sunday after riots broke out when the Dutch soccer club failed to win the title, Dutch police said on Sunday night.

According to the police around 100,000 people had come to Rotterdam to experience the expected first league title for Feyenoord since 1999. Around 4,000 saw the match in the stadium of Excelsior, 50,000 gathered at the own De Kuip stadium to watch the match on major screens and the rest went to the center of the city.

After Feyenoord lost 3-0 most fans went home disappointed and silently, but according to the police a few hundred started to throw stones and fireworks to the police in the center of the city after which the military police had to come in action.

The police arrested around 100 people, but said that more arrests might follow this week after investigating the events of Sunday. The police emphasized that "only a small group of people misbehaved".

For mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb the events were no reason to cancel a possible official title celebration in the city next week.

Feyenoord still has one chance left to capture the Dutch title. One point ahead of rivals Ajax they need a win against Heracles Almelo in their own stadium next Sunday. Enditem
