Nearly 40.2 pct of Albanian workforce employed in agriculture sector

The agricultural sector in Albania employs about 40.2 percent of employees in total, data from Labor Force Survey for 2016 showed Friday.

According to the survey conducted by institute of statistics, the share of agriculture sector in Albanian economy is growing.

Around 50 per cent of employment is in agribusiness while the sector accounts for approximately 20 percent of the country's GDP.

Meanwhile, labor force survey also showed that 41.2 percent of employees receive a salary, while 34.9 percent are self-employed and 23.9 percent are unpaid workers in a family business.

The total work force in Albania is around 1.3 million persons, of whom 43.4 percent are women, while the number of men is at 56.6 percent, according to the survey data.

The participation rate in the labor force for the population of the age 15-64 was 66.2 percent in 2016 and 15.8 percent higher for men.

According to INSTAT, the unemployment rate in 2016 fell to 14.2 percent, the lowest level since 2013.

In Albania, the agricultural sector is strongly centered on family farming as more than 90 percent of the 380,000 farms in Albania is below 2 hectares and account for about 95 percent of the land used. Enditem
