6 killed, 13 injured in road accident in southern India

At least six people were killed and 13 others injured when a speeding bus rammed into a truck in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Friday, a senior police official said.
"The accident took place on a National Highway, connecting Dindigul and Madurai districts, when the passenger bus, which was on its way to Dindigul, collided with the truck after the driver lost control of the vehicle," he said on condition of anonymity.
Six people died on the spot, while those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said, adding that the victims were all passengers of the ill-fated bus.
State Chief Minister K. Palaniswami has expressed grief over the deaths and announced a compensation of 100,000 rupees (1,500 U.S. dollars) each to the family of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (750 dollars) for those who sustained critical injuries.
In a statement, the chief minister said that he had ordered the Dindigul district administration to ensure good medical treatment for the injured.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, the police official said.
India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world, with more than 400 people getting killed in accidents every day. The accidents occurred mainly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. Endit
