14 killed, 28 injured after mini-truck falls into canal in India

At least 14 people were killed and 28 others injured, some of them critically, on Friday after a mini-truck carrying them fell into a canal in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place near Saray Neem area in Etah district, 265 km west of Lucknow city, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

Police said the victims were returning from a marriage party.

"Early this morning, 14 people were killed and nearly 28 injured in a road accident here," a senior police official posted in Etah told Xinhua. "This fatal incident happened when a mini-truck full of passengers turned turtle and fell into a canal."

Media reports said locals immediately informed the police and rescue teams rushed to the spot to take the injured to the nearby hospital.

According to police, 20 injured persons have been admitted in SN hospital Agra.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem, officials said.

The cause of the accident was being ascertained, however, preliminary investigations by police suggest negligent driving as the reason behind the mishap. Endit
