Sweden aims to achieve 95 pct broadband coverage by 2020

Xinhua, May 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, PTS, announced Tuesday that it aims to achieve 95 percent broadband coverage by 2020, a statement issued on the government's website said.

The goal is based on a new model for calculating fibre optic broadband expansion, it said.

At the same time, PTS indicated that the government's goal of 95 percent coverage is within reach, provided the high level of investment continues.

Peter Eriksson, minister for Housing and Digital Development, said Sweden's recently adopted broadband goals are very ambitious.

"PTS's new prognosis confirms that we must remove unnecessary obstacles and make sure that money is used as efficiently as possible in order to achieve the 95 percent goal of offering 100 Mbit/s for households and companies by 2020. Experience shows that it is absolutely key that municipalities are active and engaged," the minister said in the statement.

In December last year, the government presented a broadband strategy with the vision of providing coverage for everyone living in Sweden. The strategy's three goals are to provide 95 percent of all households and businesses with access to at least 100 Mbit/s by 2020, fast high quality mobile services for all of Sweden by 2023, and access to fast broadband for all of Sweden by 2025.

"For the first time the government has a broadband strategy that includes all citizens and businesses. I am especially happy that the country's rural and sparsely populated areas are included in these goals," Eriksson said in December. Endit
