South African stocks close firmer as industrial stocks gain

Shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed higher on Tuesday after a long weekend, with resource shares tumbling and industrial stocks rebounded.

The all share index was up 0.18 percent to 53,915.64 points as industrial stocks and banks gained 0.41 percent and 1.08 percent, respectively.

The resource 20 index shed 0.81 percent, while financial stocks were down by 0.47 percent.

The price of gold was 1,255.17 U.S. dollar an ounce at close of session.

Among shares on the JSE, Glencore shed 3.38 percent to R51.15, with Anglo American dropping 3.89 percent to R184.46. AngloGold Ashanti lost 1.86 percent to R148.38 and Gold Fields dropped 1.49 percent to R43.1.

Among industrials, Bidvest climbed up 3.31 percent to R164.79 Naspers gained 0.79 percent to R2, 587.7 while MTN gained 0.24 percent to R126.8. Endit
