Germany's Merkel visits UAE for talks on security, trade

Xinhua, May 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in the United Arab Emirates(UAE) Monday for discussions on security and economic issues.

The two sides talked about the latest "regional developments regarding Syria, Libya and Yemen, and the efforts of both countries to combat extremist and terrorist groups," UAE state news agency WAM reported.

Germany has offered diplomatic solution to try to end the war in Yemen, according to a transcript of Merkel's remarks provided by her office.

The UAE is part of a Saudi-led pan-Arab coalition which fights Iran-backed rebels in the war-torn Yemen.

During her state visit to Saudi Arabia one day earlier, Merkel called for a diplomatic solution in the two-year long conflict in Yemen.

Meanwhile, trade is also high on Merkel's agenda.

The UAE, a major oil supplier and the most diversified Arab economy, is Germany's biggest trade partner in the Middle East. Bilateral trade reached about 16 billion dollars in 2016. Enditem
