Tunisia recorded 46 strikes by workers nationwide during the first quarter of 2017, which mostly demanded salary hikes, the Tunisian Labor and Reconciliation General Directorate announced on Sunday.
The strikes resulted in 23,900 lost working days, equivalent to 191,000 hours of work, and affected 40 private companies, including 20 foreign ones.
The same source highlighted that the number of strikes in the first quarter of 2017 is less than that of the same period in 2016.
The textile and apparel industry accounted for 25 percent of the strikes during the first quarter of 2017.
The strikes were also held in the education, finance, health and municipality sectors, accounting for 60 percent of lost workdays during the first quarter of 2017.
Demands for remuneration, salary increases and financial benefits were requested by 83 percent of strikers, added the Labor and Reconciliation General Directorate.
The geographical distribution of the strikes revealed that 43 percent were observed in Ben Arous (in the capital of Grand-Tunis) and Sfax (in the center of the country), the second economic province of Tunisia after the capital city. Endit
