Chinese NGO starts rebuilding quake-damaged school in Nepal

The China Foundation for PovertyAlleviation (CFPA), a Chinese NGO, started rebuilding aquake-damaged school in Nepal on Sunday.

The groundbreaking ceremony of theMahendra Adarsha Vidyashram public school was held in Nepal'sLalitpur district with the presence of Chinese delegates, localleaders, students and their parents.

The school is being rebuilt by theCFPA under the financial support from He Daofeng and his wifeAngela He. He is the former executive vice president of theCFPA.

The program is expected to providea safe study space for almost 1,000 students.

"This school is for common peopleand families. It can provide opportunity of quality education andvocational training to needy. I always want to help the people whoneed it the most," He told Xinhua.

Mahendra Adarsha Vidyashram,founded in 1958, is a well-known public secondary school in theValley. Out of two buildings damaged during the devastatingearthquake in 2015, one building is being constructed under theChinese support while the school management committee willconstruct another one.

The construction of the newtwo-storey building is expected to be completed within a year.

The Chinese delegates alsodistributed bags and stationery items to the students.

Expressing appreciation to theChinese organization for helping the education sector of quake-hitNepal, the school officials said such assistance will strengthenthe people-to-people ties.

Pampha Bhusal, chairman of theschool committee, said "We are very happy to get this support. Wewere in dire need of school building and the support came frompeople of our neighboring country, so we are very thankful tothem."

In addition, the foundation alsohanded over a computer lab donated by the South South EducationFoundation to enable students to have more access to informationand advanced education.

The CFPA, which has been focusingon education and health sector of Nepal right after the 2015disaster, is investing 2.7 million yuan (390,000 U.S. dollars) forreconstruction of two school buildings in Kathmandu valley.

It has carried out more than 15projects in the sectors like disaster relief, food, water andsanitation, disinfection treatment, health care and materialsdistribution. Endit
