4.9 mln int'l tourists visit Spain in March

Spain received a total of 4.9 million international tourists in March, an increase of 6.1 percent year on year, according to data published Friday by Spain's Statistical Office (INE).

In March, the number of tourists from Britain amounted to 1.1 million, constituting 22.8 percent of the total, followed by Germany and France with 721,784 visitors and 613,616 tourists, respectively.

In the first quarter of the year, the country received 12.93 million international tourists, a 9.3 percent increase on a year-on-year basis, with 2.8 million from Britain, which is a year-on-year increase of 11 percent, the INE said.

More than 1.7 million of the tourists in the first quarter came from Germany, an increase of 2 percent, and the number of French visitors reached almost 1.7 million, an 8.3 percent increase.

The archipelago of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean was the main destination in the first quarter, receiving more than 3.6 million international tourists, an increase of 6.8 percent year on year. Endi
