JSE trades firmer ahead of long weekend

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) was firmer on Friday at close of trading notwithstanding losses by stocks in the resources and gold-mining sectors.

The JSE all share index was 0.25 percent up at 53,817.31 points and the blue-chip top 40 added 0.19 percent. Banks were 1.2 percent higher, and financials gained 0.34 percent. The gold index lost 0.86 percent and resources dropped 0.45 percent.

The South Africa rand was trading at R13.34 to the U.S. dollar at 5:00 p.m. from Thursday's R13.36.

BHP Billiton lost 1.54 percent to R203.05. Anglo American added 1.7 percent at R191.92.

Rand hedges were mostly down on a stronger rand. British American Tobacco dropped 1.7 percent to R900.86 and Richemont lost 0.25 percent to R112.13.

Naspers was up 0.58 percent to R2, 538.55.

Goldfields lost 2.3 percent to R43.75 while Sibanye lost 0.37 percent to R27.05. Endit
