Palestinians strike in solidarity with protesting prisoners

Xinhua, April 27, 2017 Adjust font size:

A general strike swept the West Bank on Thursday in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, 1,500 of which have been on a hunger strike since Palestinian National Prisoners Day on April 17.

The general strike included public and private institutions, such as commercial shops, transportation and academic institutions.

Palestinian activists called for this strike in order to admit people into the solidarity tents of families and those supporting prisoners in their hunger strikes.

The activists have also called for protests at major Israeli military checkpoints at city entrances.

Since April 17 around 1,500 Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails went on a hunger strike protesting the lack of basic human rights and ill treatment by the Israeli Prison Authority.

The prisoners' demands include longer family visits as well as permitting families to take photographs with their detained sons or daughters, a public phone, access to a television and newspapers among other demands. Endit
