Nairobi bourse key index in major rise as selected stocks swell

The benchmark Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 Share Index on Wednesday rose 25 points to hit a new high of 3,162.37, boosted by rise in prices of key stocks.

British American Tobacco, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and CFC Stanbic were among the stocks whose prices went up by between 0.5 percent and 8.3 percent.

KCB was the top traded stock after moving 8.5 million shares at 0.32 U.S. dollars, an increase of 2.4 percent.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom operator, came second with 6.2 million shares at unchanged price of 0.18 dollars.

Equity Bank was the day's third best traded stock after transacting 2.8 million shares at 0.33 dollars, an increase of 1.5 percent.

Some 24 million shares valued at 7.8 million dollars were traded in 1,006 deals, down from 32 million shares worth 8.6 million dollars posted in the previous session.

The NSE All Share Index ended the day at a high of 133.13 from 132.71 in the previous session while market capitalization, which measures shareholders wealth rose to 19 billion dollars. Endit
