Sri Lanka's cabinet on Wednesday approved a framework for new counter-terrorism laws.
The government information department said the framework was presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the cabinet decided to approve the framework and instruct the legal draftsmen to draft the proposed act based on the framework.
The new counter-terrorism laws will replace a controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) which was used to crack down on Tamil Tiger rebels and their supporters.
The initial draft counter-terrorism law drew some concerns and it was amended before being submitted to the cabinet for approval. Endit
