India's CBI files case against former head

Xinhua, April 25, 2017 Adjust font size:

India's federal investigative agency - Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) - filed a case against its former head Ranjit Sinha in the coal block allocations case, officials said Tuesday.

"CBI filed a first information report against Ranjit Sinha under law that deals with criminal misconduct pertaining to abusing official position while holding a public office and indulging in corruption," an official said.

Sinha faces allegations of trying to scuttle investigation, inquiries and prosecutions carried out by the probe agency in coal block allocation cases, commonly known as coal scam in India, during his tenure as head of the agency.

In January this year, India's top court constituted a special investigation team (SIT) headed by present CBI chief Alok Verma to probe allegations of abuse of authority committed by Sinha.

The court's directions came after it stated it was prima facie satisfied that Sinha abused his position.

India's national auditor Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in 2012 pointed out that country's coal mining rights were sold off at cheaper rates to private companies.

According to CAG, the lack of transparency incurred a loss of around 33 billion U.S. dollars. Endit
