Turkish air strikes in Iraq kill five Kurdish fighters

Xinhua, April 25, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Turkish warplanes on Tuesday conducted air strikes targeting the positions of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, killing at least five Iraqi Kurdish fighters and wounding ten others, local Kurdish media reports said.

The Turkish jets, in the early hours of the day, hit the PKK positions in different areas in Sinjar mountain in northwestern Iraq, but the Iraqi Kurdish fighters apparently were killed by mistake at their position which was close to the PKK positions, according to the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), a major Kurdish party in which the Iraqi President Fuad Masoum is a leading figure.

There were no immediate reports on possible casualties among the PKK rebels in Sinjar area.

Meanwhile, the Turkish military said it has carried out air strikes against suspected Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq and in northeastern Syria, in a bid to prevent militants from smuggling fighters and weapons into Turkey.

The PKK, waging a separatist war against Turkey since 1984, is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
