Afghan detainees still face torture, says UN report

Detainees in Afghanistan continue to face torture and ill-treatment in government detention facilities, according to a report released Monday by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and the UN Human Rights Office.

The report is based on interviews with conflict-related detainees in 62 detention facilities, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at the daily news briefing.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein was cited as saying that it is essential that there is proper monitoring of detention facilities and meaningful investigations to ensure those accused of torture are held accountable. Endit
