German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere presented Germany's crime statistics for the year 2016. The number of violent crimes increased significantly while that of burglaries decreased.
The total number of criminal acts went up slightly by 0.7 percent, from 6.33 million to 6.37 million.
The increase in violent crimes is above average; the total number of cases involving murder or manslaughter increased by 14.3 percent, and rape and sexual assault by 12.8 percent.
The total number of criminal suspects slightly increased compared to 2015. Around 30 percent of the suspects were not of German nationality; the number of crimes committed by foreigners rose to 616,230 in 2016, compared to 555,820 in 2015. 28.3 percent of these criminal suspects are immigrants; this represents a share of 8.6 percent of all suspects, compared to 5.7 percent in 2015.
German police registered 41,549 politically motivated crimes in 2016; this represents an increase by 6.6 percent compared to 2015.
The number of politically motivated crimes has continuously increased over the last four years, a fact de Maiziere labelled "inacceptable".
He further complained about a general increase in disrespect, violence and hate in Germany. Right-wing motivated criminal acts remain at a high level of 23,555 registered offences, an increase by 2.6 percent. The number of right-wing violent crimes went up by 14.3 percent.
The 66.5 percent increase in 2016 in politically motivated crimes committed by foreigners -- meaning all offences caused by "imported" political ideologies, according to German police -- is significant.
Statistically speaking, Bavaria is the safest German state. Excluding offences against the alien laws, there are only 4,785 crimes committed per 100,000 residents. Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg lead the ranking with over 8,000 offences per 100,000 resident respectively. Endit
