Ruling Socialist party unanimously agrees to support Macron's presidential bid

Jean-Christophe Camabadelis, secretary-general of France's ruling Socialist Party (PS) on Monday said the party's leaders agreed to back centrist Emmanuel Macron to win May 7 French presidential runoff.

"We are calling to beat the extreme right, Marine Le Pen, and therefore we are calling to vote Macron," Cambadelis told French news channel BFMTV.

He said the party agreed unanimously to support Macron after its representative Benoit Hamon was knocked out of the competition in the first round.

"For us, it is a new campaign that begins, it is a campaign that we must lead with great determination," he stressed

Dominating France's political landscape for decades, the Socialist Party has been weakened by internal rifts and sliding popularity of President Francois Hollande. Endit
