Bulgaria destroys 861 kg of illicit drugs

Xinhua, April 21, 2017 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian authorities on Thursday and Friday burned 861 kg illicit narcotic substances worth more than 37 million U.S. dollars, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a statement.

The drugs, among them 479 kg of marijuana, 209 kg of heroin, 107 kg of amphetamine and 54 kg of ecstasy, have been seized by the NCA and the Ministry of Interior in the course of more than 890 criminal proceedings, the statement said.

Authorities estimated the total value of the destroyed drugs on the black market would be about 68 million BGN (some 37.3 million U.S. dollars).

Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. Over the last 17 years, the NCA organized and implemented 56 procedures for destruction of drugs with a total weight of 37.9 tons, the statement said. Endit
