Incumbent PM elected as president of Serbia: final results

Serbia's Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) announced on Thursday the final results of the April 2 presidential elections, proclaiming incumbent Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic as the official winner and the future head of state.

President of RIK Vladimir Dimitrijevic said at a session on Thursday night that Vucic, candidate of the coalition around the ruling Progressive party, won more than 2 million votes or 55.08 percent.

"Victory with more than 50 percent means that Vucic was elected for the president of Serbia in the first round of the elections," Dimitrijevic said.

He said that candidate Sasa Jankovic,former ombudsman, ranked second and won 16.36 percent of the votes. The third was comedian and political activist Luka Maksimovic who gained 9.43 percent, while former Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic was fourth with 5.66 percent.

The election was scheduled one month earlier by Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic, as the mandate of incumbent President Tomislav Nikolic expires by the end of May. Endit
