Spanish police conduct further searches in anti-corruption operation

Spanish authorities on Thursday searched the headquarters of construction company OHL as part of ongoing investigations on the alleged illegal financing of the ruling People's Party (PP), Spanish press reported.

The searches came a day after the arrest of the former president of the Autonomous Community of Madrid Ignacio Gonzalez to investigate possible links between the award of public contracts by the Madrid regional government and the alleged irregular funding of the PP.

OHL has denied any illegal commissions to the PP, while at the same time offering the "maximum degree of collaboration" with investigators.

Thursday also saw Esperanza Aguirre, another former president of the Madrid Autonomous Community and the PP's defeated candidate in the 2015 municipal election, being investigated as part of a cash-for-favors corruption trial.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will appear as a witness in the same trial, although he will be given the privilege of testifying through video-conference.

Rajoy on Thursday said he would be "delighted"to be able to give evidence as it was something he considered to be "normal." Endit
