Iran's supreme leader urges high turnout in presidential election

Xinhua, April 19, 2017 Adjust font size:

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Wednesday for a massive turnout in the upcoming presidential election, reported Press TV.

"Enemies are resorting to provocations in order to sabotage the elections," Khamenei said, adding however that the nation should "remain aware so that elections are held in a vibrant, passionate, healthy and secure manner."

Khamenei said the nation's resistance was key to foiling various plots by enemies against the country over the past decades.

"An election of such a nature (with resistance against plots) would lend the country increased security," he added.

Over 1,630 candidates have registered to run in Iran's presidential election next month as registration for the upcoming race closed on Saturday.

The Iranian Guardian Council of Constitution, a clerical body overseeing elections, has started assessing applicants' qualifications as of Sunday and will announce its approved list by April 27.

According to Iran's Interior Ministry, the approved candidates will launch their presidential campaigns on April 28, with Election Day slated for May 19. Endit
