2 police officials killed in attacks in Afghanistan

Two senior police officials were killed and eight other personnel injured in two separate Afghan attacks, police said Wednesday.

In one incident, Taliban militants carried out an ambush on the convoy of Payanda Mohammad, executive official of an Afghan border police force battalion in northern Takhar province, killing him on the spot, provincial police spokesman Khalil Aser told Xinhua.

Four police personnel were also wounded in the attack which took place Wednesday morning in Charsee Ha locality of Khawaja Bahawuddin district in the province, 245 km north of Kabul.

In southern Zabul province, Saifullah Hotak, police chief of Shinkay disrict, was killed and four police wounded after Hotak's vehicle was struck by a roadside bombing late on Tuesday, according to deputy provincial police chief Ghulam Jilani Farahi.

The Afghan security forces' casualties have risen recently as they struggle against a surge in attacks by Taliban and other anti-government groups.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Enditem
