Slovak diplomat appointed chief of UN economic commission for Europe

Slovak diplomat Olga Algayerova has been appointed as executive secretary of the Geneva-based United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak confirmed on Tuesday.

"I'm proud that a Slovak citizen has been appointed to this senior position for the third time now," said Lajcak.

The foreign minister noted Algayerova's career of over 20 years in foreign trade and between 2006-2010 as State Secretary of the ministry.

ECE is one of the UN's five regional commissions focused on regional economic development.

The commission's executive secretary position was previously held by former Slovak foreign affairs minister Jan Kubis, who succeeded Brigita Schmognerova, former finance minister of Slovakia. Endit
