1st LD: Egypt's former interior minister sentenced 7 years in jail over looting public funds

An Egyptian court sentenced on Saturday Habib al-Adly, the longest serving interior minister under the ousted president Hosni Mubarak, seven years in jail over embezzlement of public funds, official news agency MENA reported.

Al-Adly and twelve of his aides were accused of illegally seizing two billion pounds (11 millions U.S. dollars) belonging to the Interior Ministry during their time in office from 2000-2011.

In November 2014, a court dropped charges against Mubarak, al-Adly and six of his aides over the killing of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 revolution.

He was acquitted in another corruption charges in March 2015.

He served a three-year sentence he was given for taking advantage of his position and forcing police conscript to work for his property.

Several Mubarak-era figures have been recently released pending retrials on charges of corruption for lack of evidences. Endit
