1st LD Writethru: 4 Afghan district officials injured in bomb attack

Xinhua, April 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

A district governor together with three other officials were injured in a bomb attack in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar on Saturday, the provincial government said in a statement.

"Ghalib Mujahid, governor of Bati Kot district, was injured following a roadside bombing at around 8:00 a.m. local time in the district, southeast of provincial capital Jalalabad city," it said in a statement.

Among the injured people were the district police chief and two intelligence officials. The officials were travelling in a vehicle to arrest suspected militants in surrounding areas of the district before the blast, the statement added.

The wounded were shifted to a nearby hospital where they remained in stable condition, the statement noted.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast so far, but Taliban militants and Islamic State (IS) fighters have presence in the area.

The latest targeted attack came two days after the U.S. forces in Afghanistan struck an IS hideout with a massive bomb, killing scores of the militants and destroying several bunkers and underground tunnels in neighboring Achin district.

The mountainous province, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and militants over the past couple of years. Enditem
