Croatian, Italian ministers call for security, free movement

Croatia and Italy on Thursday agreed that both EU border security and free movement within the EU should be ensured.

EU border security and free movement within the EU were in the interest of the two countries, Croatian Foreign Minister Davor Ivo Stier said after taking with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano in Pula, the northern Croatian Adriatic city.

Croatia has communicated with the European Commission on the issue of traffic delays at border crossings and has kept touch with the interior ministries and border police of the countries involved, Stier said.

Alfano, who was on a day-long working visit to Croatia, said that Italy would do its best to ease travelers' discomfort and ensure both the right to free movement and security.

Security was of exceptional importance and it has no alternative, Alfano said, adding Croatia is at a crossroads between its duties and rights because it is part of the EU but is also about to tackle the issue of the Schengen border regime.

The two ministers also agreed that the cooperation between Croatia and Italy would be intensified. Enditem
