S. African stocks weaker ahead of Easter holidays

Shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed weaker on Wednesday ahead of Easter holidays.

The all share index was 0.08 percent off at 53,510.22 while the blue-chip top 40 index dropped 0.22 percent. Resources was down 0.46 percent and industrial shares lost 0.24 percent.

The South Africa rand traded in as the market watched the local political upheavals characterized by Wednesday's protest against President Jacob Zuma.

Diversified miner and trader Glencore was off 2.91 percent to R51.73 and Sasol shed 0.42 percent to R414.4. Gold Fields, however, was up 6.63 percent to R55.51, with Sibanye Gold gaining 6.43 percent to R35.4. Anglo American lost 1.45 percent to R196.63 and Impala Platinum gained 3.53 percent to R48.4.

Mediclinic gained 2.11 percent to R128. Paper and pulp group Sappi gained 4.55 percent to R99.75. Endit
