India says perpetrators of chemical attack must be punished

Xinhua, April 13, 2017 Adjust font size:

India Thursday said that chemical weapons must not be used anywhere in the world under any circumstances and perpetrators of such acts should be brought to book, in the wake of the suspected chemical attack in Syria earlier this month.

"India is a signatory to the chemical weapons convention. It has been our consistent position that the use of chemical weapons by anyone anywhere under any circumstances should not happen," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

He added: "Any perpetrator of such an act should be held accountable. That is our position on the use of chemical weapons," he added.

The suspected chemical attack took place in the rebel-held Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun on April 4, claiming the lives of over 80 people while hundreds suffered symptoms consistent with a nerve agent.

Syrian President Bashar-al Assad has said that reports of the chemical attack by his forces were "100 percent fabrication." Endit
