Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), has made frequent public appearances this week amid rising tension with the United States over the latter's threat to take military action against Pyongyang.

Kim attended an inaugural ceremony of Ryomyong Street, a new residential street for scientists, in downtown Pyongyang Thursday morning. He did not make any speech at the ceremony to open the street, which has many modern and chic high-rise residential condominiums. (DPRK-U.S.-Ties)

DAKAR -- At least 20 people were killed and about 100 wounded in a fire on Wednesday at a Muslim religious gathering in southeastern Senegal's Medina Gounass, local media reported on Thursday.

The gathering, called "Daaka", is a spiritual retreat that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year from Senegal and several countries of the sub region. It took place in the middle of the bush, under the temporary shelters of straw. (Senegal-Fire)

TOKYO -- Top negotiators from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) met here Thursday on pushing forward trade in goods and services as well as investment at the 12th round of talks on a trilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

Wang Shouwen, Chinese vice minister of commerce, said at the meeting that while global economy is facing a slowdown and uncertain future, and world trade and investment are encountering impediments, China's economic growth in the past decade underscores the fact that global trade has played and will continue to play a key role in driving the world economy. BRASILIA -- Brazilian President Michel Temer on Wednesday said the government must continue its work despite a massive corruption investigation targeting more than 80 officials, including members of his cabinet.
