UN food agency scales up operations in Yemen

The World Food Programme (WFP) is scaling up its emergency food operations in Yemen to provide food assistance to up to 9 million people in one of the world's worst hunger crises, a UN spokesman told reporters here Wednesday.

The new emergency operation will cost up to 1.2 billion U.S. dollars over a one-year period and should allow WFP to gradually scale up assistance to feed all severely food insecure people in Yemen every month, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.

"The success of this operation hinges on immediate sufficient resources from donors," he said.

During April and May and until WFP can secure the funds it needs, it will prioritize 6.7 million people for urgent food assistance.

Some 2.5 million of them -- particularly those in governorates hardest-hit by food insecurity and at risk of slipping into a famine -- will receive a package of assistance aimed at averting famine. Enditem
