Spain pays homage to Masters winner, Sergio Garcia

Xinhua, April 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia is on the front page of the country's papers on Monday morning following his dramatic win over Justin Rose in the US Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia on Sunday night.

The 37-year-old Garcia beat Rose in a play-off to win his first major title and to earn the plaudits of his fellow countrymen.

"Sergio, how great you are," headlined sports paper, Diario Marca, highlighting that only three golfers have played in as many 'majors' as the Spaniards without a win, but that nobody has as many top-10 or top-5 finishes in major tournaments .

As a result of that long-awaited triumph, Garcia is now at last able to say "Goodbye, to one of the biggest curses in golf."

Diario AS, echoed that line commenting that "At last Sergio Garcia has his major title," while the Barcelona based "El Mundo Deportivo' gives the "5 keys to Sergio Garcia's win in Augusta," among which they highlight his "attitude" and "patience."

The non-sporting press also pay homage to the 37-year-old with the 'El Pais' newspaper making a play on words based on the famous green jacket worn by the Masters Winners, saying that Garcia has now been able to "share the cut with the greatest players in the game."

Spanish golfers have won the Masters before with the legendary Severiano Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olarzabal both winning it twice each, but it is 18 years since a Spaniard triumphed in Georgia; something remembered by the 'El Mundo' newspaper, which wrote, "it would have been impossible to have won with more tension, but he won."

Finally the website of Spanish State TV network, RTVE proclaims "Sergio Garcia touches glory and is able to put on the 'green jacket' in Augusta."

There can be little doubt that after going so close, so often Garcia's victory is well-deserved. Endit
