Bulgarian customs seize 14 tons of counterfeit cigarette packs

Xinhua, April 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs seized 14 tons of counterfeit cigarette pack printings at Danube Bridge checkpoint near Vidin at the border with Romania on Monday, officials said.

The printings, bearing the logos of three popular cigarette brands, were found in a Bulgaria-registered truck which was declared to be carrying cardboard to another European Union (EU) country, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release.

According to the NCA, the amount of printings would be enough to produce several million boxes of smuggled cigarettes.

Just a month ago, customs officers seized another shipment of illegal cigarette packs weighing five tons, the NCA added.

Due to its location, Bulgaria is a favorite destination for traffickers, with more than 3.7 tons of drugs, 43.9 million illegal cigarettes and 51.7 tons of smuggled tobacco seized by the NCA in 2016. Endit
