Australian football: round 26 review

Xinhua, April 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

Round 26 in Australia's A-League kicked off on Friday when Melbourne City overcame Adelaide United 1-0 at home.

Although Adelaide looked sharp and fought very hard, a Tim Cahill header in the first half was enough to edge out the visitors.

On Saturday, Wellington Phoenix's good form continued, holding first-placed Sydney FC to a 1-1 draw at home.

Despite Sydney missing a number of key players, they controlled the game and created several chances.

But a last minute equaliser from the Phoenix's Michael McGlinchey, saved the match to the delight of the New Zealand supporters.

The Melbourne Victory was held to a scoreless draw on Saturday when they travelled to the Western Sydney Wanderers' home-base.

The match was the Wanderers to win after a Daniel Georgievski red card saw Melbourne left with 10 men in the 55th minute, but Western Sydney were unable to put their chances away.

In Perth, the Glory demolished the Brisbane Roar 3-1 moving them into fifth position on the ladder.

On Sunday, the Central Coast Mariners eased past bitter rivals the Newcastle Jets 2-0, in a match to avoid the wooden spoon and last place on the ladder. Endite
