-- A confidential document reveals that South Africa's nuclear-build programme kicks off in earnest in June when Eskom issues a formal request for proposals from companies bidding for the estimated R1 trillion (US$72.5 billion)contract.

The nuclear deal - for which Russian company Rosatom is widely considered to be the frontrunner - is "directly related" to President Jacob Zuma's axing of finance minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas, say senior Treasury officials.(City Press)

-- South Africa's downgrade by Fitch Ratings agency is a vote of no confidence in new Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba's ability to hold the fiscal line and stabilize debt, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Saturday.

"This should come as no surprise given that the minister is trying to convince the ratings agencies that he can hold the fiscal line and implement 'radical economic transformation', which is simply not credible," the DA said.(News24)

-- Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has urged members of the African National Congress to imitate the late South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani, with standing with the poor and defending them.
