American singer Macy Gray presents jazz-infused album in Portugal

Xinhua, April 7, 2017 Adjust font size:

The unique raspy-throated, moody voice of American Soul and R&B singer Macy Gray filled the Belem Cultural Center in Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday, evoking emotions and nostalgia.

Gray came with her new album "Stripped", a reimagined version of her first major hit, infused with jazz.

She sang enthusiastically the tunes including "Sweet Baby," "I Try," "She Ain't Right For You" and "Creep." She encouraged her fans to sing and dance with her throughout the performance and held fans' hands at the end. "You're all beautiful," she said several times.

"Stripped," her 10th album, was recorded at an abandoned church in Brooklyn, New York City, the United States and came out on Sept. 9. As her first jazz recording, the new album includes older songs like "I try" and covers of other singers like Bob Marley and Metallica.

"It's just one mic, me, a stand-up bass, a guitar player and a drummer. We did the whole album in two days," she told the Rolling Stone magazine.

Gray's first album On How Life Is (1999) was a great success, and the star won a Grammy award in 2000 for the song "I try."

Gray was born in Canton, Ohio on Sept. 6, 1967. She is said to have been influenced by the voice of Billie Holiday, and has received five Grammy award nominations.

She has also starred in several films including Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3 and For Colored Girls. Endi
