Mock IED causes hours-long flight delay at Toronto airport

Xinhua, April 6, 2017 Adjust font size:

A 58-year-old U.S. man has been arrested and will face a mischief charge after he tried to board a Chicago-bound United Airlines flight with a "mock improvised explosive device" at Canadian Toronto's Pearson International Airport Thursday, according to CTV.

The mock improvised explosive device in a suitcase was found during an inspection of the American man's suitcase at the airport's pre-clearance area, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the airport immediately stopped processing passengers in the airport's pre-clearance facility.

CTV said passengers were initially told the delay was due to weather conditions in Chicago. But they later learned that a security issue was keeping the plane grounded.

After waiting for several hours on the tarmac, all passengers on United Flight 547 were escorted off the plane and re-screened in the airport's isolation area.

Normal operations have resumed at the Canadian airport after the investigation is now complete.

It is unclear why the passenger tried to bring the device aboard the flight. Endite
