JSE closes weaker on Thursday

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed weaker on Thursday, but off its intra-day worst levels as banks, financials and retailers pared earlier losses on a stable rand, and gold stocks continued to shine.

The South Africa rand traded largely unchanged in a narrow range at about R13.8 to the U.S. dollar at 5:00 p.m. (CAT).

The all share closed 0.14 percent lower at 52,918.4 points and the blue-chip top 40 was up 0.04 percent. Banks were down 1.78 percent. Financials shed 0.67 percent. The gold index gained 0.6 percent. Resources ended the day flat, up 0.08 percent. Endit
