S.Korea's online shopping takes up biggest portion of retail sales in February

Private consumption in cyberspace in South Korea took up the biggest portion of total retail sales in February on strong demand for online shopping, a government report showed Wednesday.
Online shopping transactions reached 5.86 trillion won (5.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, up 22.9 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.
It accounted for the highest-ever 19.4 percent of combined retail sales, which climbed 2.9 percent to 30.12 trillion won.
Mobile shopping through smartphones led the growth by jumping 37.8 percent from a year earlier to 3.39 trillion won. It made up almost 60 percent of the total online shopping.
Consumption in cyberspace continued to grow, reflecting a change in the way of spending among South Korean consumers.
The online consumption was led by demand for cosmetics and fashion items that jumped 47.2 percent and 46.7 percent respectively in February.
Online demand for travel reservations, auto items and food also posted a double-digit expansion. Endit
