German prosecutor drops Opel investigation

Xinhua, April 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

The state prosecutor in Frankfurt announced Tuesday they were ending the preliminary inquisition into Opel.

Opel was accused of fraud regarding emissions from its diesel cars, so causing a health hazard.

State investigators have been evaluating documents for months, but found no illegal acts according to environmental criminal law and no evidence of fraud.

No manipulation software was used, unlike at Volkswagen which admitted in September 2015 that it had installed illegal software in 11 million vehicles. The software could detect when the car was being tested and adjusted its emissions accordingly.

The investigation followed allegations made by the German environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe in May 2016.

Opel is recalling some of its diesel model cars after experts at the Ministry of Transport measured their emissions and found them to be suspicious. Endit
