Xinhua, April 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Public support for the Australian government has fallen again, according to the results of the latest Newspoll, with the Liberal National Party (LNP) coalition government now trailing the Labor opposition 47 percent to 53 percent.

The previous Newspoll had the government trailing 48 points to 52, but more recent polls, conducted by Fairfax Media and Guardian Australia showed the government was trailing Labor 45 percent to 55 percent and 46 percent to 54 percent respectively.

In the primary vote - before preferences - government support has fallen 1 point to 36 percent while Labor's primary vote went up 1 point to 36 percent. Far right minor party One Nation and far left party the Greens both received 10 percent of the primary vote, with the remaining 8 percent shared by other minor parties and independents.

In addition, opposition leader Bill Shorten has shortened the gap as preferred prime minister.

In the previous Newspoll published on March 20, 43 percent of Australians said current PM Malcolm Turnbull would make a better prime minister to 29 percent support for Shorten, while in Monday's Newspoll, support for Turnbull had fallen 2 points to 41 percent while Shorten's support rose 3 points to 32 percent.

The next federal election is due to take place sometime in 2019. Endit
