5 killed as boat capsizes in western India

Xinhua, March 29, 2017 Adjust font size:

At least five people were killed and 26 others rescued safely after a boat capsized in India's western territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, police said Wednesday.

The boat capsized in Dudhni lake of Khanvel town on Tuesday evening.

"Last evening a boat carrying 31 people capsized in Dudhni lake here. Five people including four women were killed in the tragedy but 26 others were rescued safely," Jignesh Patel, a police officer told Xinhua over phone. "All the bodies have been fished out. Some of the rescued people had suffered minor injuries but they are stable," said the officer.

According to the police, the boat was carrying domestic tourists including the staff from a resort.

Police officials said the ill-fated boat was newly purchased by the resort owner.

"The boat is still under water and we are being told it was a new one," Patel said. "We are on the spot to ascertain the reasons of the accident."

Last month at least 10 people were killed and several others injured after a fiber boat capsized in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Endit
