Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Monday, with the Nikkei stock index slumping to a six-week low on concerns U.S. President Donald Trump may struggle to realize his economic policies.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 276.94 points, or 1.44 percent, from Friday to end the day at 18,985.59, marking its lowest close since Feb. 9.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 19.53 points, or 1.26 percent, to finish at 1,524.39.

All industry categories on the main section retreated into negative territory by the closing bell, with insurance, securities and real estate-linked stocks comprising the day's biggest losers.

Declining issues hammered advancing ones by 1,671 to 252, and trading volume on the main section on Monday totaled 1,762.93 million shares, dropping from last Friday's volume of 1,821.74 million shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 2,031 billion yen (18.42 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
